TOI-GYE is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang (1501-1570), an authority on neo-Confucianism. The 37 movements of the pattern refer to his birthplace on 37 parallel of latitude. Like the yul-gok this diagram traces the word "scholar".

Toi gye is the seventh of 24 International Taekwondo Federation hyungs. Some find it difficult to accept the philosophical aspect of tae kwon do forms. But if you stretch your imagination, it adds a deeper component to your training.

Many of the ITF hyung are connected to historical events and people in Korean history.
